After the horrific murder of Jo Cox in June 2016, many people expressed a strong desire to take action to continue Jo’s work and to keep her values and memory alive. Since last Summer her sister Kim has been chairing a group of volunteers who all had the same desire – to ‘do something’ to ensure that as much positivity as possible comes from the most horrendous of situations.
Thus, More in Common, Batley & Spen was born – a non-political group from a diverse range of backgrounds who are planning a series of events and activities to engage people in building stronger communities, fostering positive relationships and creating a legacy for Jo of which we can all be proud.
The Great Get Together is at the centre of these plans…..Inspired by Jo’s life, and taking place over the weekend of the anniversary of her murder (16th-18th June 2017), the campaign hopes to bring the nation together, and is motivated by these powerful words from Jo’s inaugural speech: “…we are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us”.
Events being planned include street parties, BBQs, picnics, coffee mornings, tea parties and iftars. Whatever you and your neighbours decide, you will be part of a huge national occasion which will celebrate the very best of our communities.Back to sponsors
